LA Fashion Festival 2019 Debuts Matthew Rolston’s “Hollywood Royale: Out of the School of Los Angeles” as a First-Ever Untethered Virtual Reality Gallery Experience, Presented by The Mill

LA Fashion Festival 2019 Debuts Matthew Rolston’s “Hollywood Royale: Out of the School of Los Angeles” as a First-Ever Untethered Virtual Reality Gallery Experience, Presented by The Mill

Glamour, high technology, sustainability and style come together in a unique form at LAFF19: a virtual reality gallery experience of celebrity photographer Matthew Rolston’s 1980s retrospective exhibition, “Hollywood Royale: Out of the School of Los Angeles.” Utilizing Oculus Quest, the latest in untethered headset technology, The Mill, an international leader in VFX and creative content, has created this first-of-its-kind moment in Hollywood history.

From Michael Jackson to Madonna, Prince, George Michael, Cyndi Lauper and many more, the portraits of Hollywood Royale comprise a literal ‘who’s-who’ of ‘80s pop culture, commissioned largely for Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine and Jann Wenner’s Rolling Stone. Matthew Rolston’s influential photographic approach is captured in a three-dimensional virtual gallery space. Take an intimate ‘journey’ through Rolston’s photographs, curated and guided by the artist himself, and hear some of the personal stories behind these classic images.

Rolston’s Hollywood Royale VR gallery will be on display September 20-21 at the Los Angeles Fashion Festival, an innovative showcase for the very latest in film, fashion, beauty and retail. In accordance with the theme of its 2019 season, LAFF believes sustainability shouldn’t be a luxury; it should be a way of life.

Sustainability can be expressed in many forms, and one of them, according to Rolston, is “the sustainability of cultural memory.” Rolston’s photographs of the 1980s are highly inflected by the visual history of Hollywood’s Golden Age, and as such, help to sustain the cinema city’s traditions of high style and theatricality.

Immersion producer: The Mill is made up of artists, technologists, and makers for all media, working at the frontiers of visual narrative. Built on the bedrock of cinematic legacy, and high-profile fashion commercial work, they use virtual and augmented realities to build the future of interactive and immersive experiences.

Experience producer: Poised as a cornerstone of LA fashion events, LA Fashion Festival (LAFF) showcases progressive ideas via an immersive cultural experience of film, retail, innovation, and beauty influences. Founded on the basis of inclusion, sustainability, and community, LAFF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit platform produced by The kulturspace Foundation for forward-thinking creatives & brands to showcase collaborations and incite meaningful exchanges.

Featured Artist: Matthew Rolston is a photographer, director, creative director and artist whose work has helped define the aesthetics of American portrait photography. In 1977, Rolston was ‘discovered’ by Andy Warhol, who commissioned portraits for proto-celebrity magazine, Interview, soon followed by assignments for Rolling Stone, from founding editor Jann Wenner, and from Vanity Fair magazine, under editors Tina Brown and later, Graydon Carter. Rolston’s images are notable for their glamorous lighting and detail-rich sets. His photographs have been exhibited worldwide and are in the permanent collections of LACMA and the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., among others.

The Swagabonds is the first fashion brand designed in collaboration with Artists from Skid Row. Skid Row contains one of the largest stable populations of homeless people in the United States. While Skid Row is doubtless a hard place to live—marked by prostitution, drugs, and violence—it is nonetheless a community, where moments of light and humor often emerge from the darkness. It’s a village where you wave at someone at every corner, where people call out to each other, where people look out for each other. It’s this chaotic fraternity that few people know about.

We’ll hear from founders Gigi Freyeisen and Audrey d'Erneville about their mission to discover awesome talents while helping them rise above their circumstances through art and fashion.

Chemicals, Seduction, and God: Exploring perfumery through time

Did Cleopatra really use scent to seduce Marc Antony? Was Marie Antoinette really captured because of her perfume? Have modern chemicists really bottled the smell of human pheromones? The folklore of perfumery is as irreverent and varied as the medium itself. The Institute for Art and Olfaction is pleased to join LA Fashion Film Festival to present two talks about the rich and aromatic history of perfume. IAO founder Saskia Wilson-Brown will lead participants through an anecdote-laden and aromatic talk exploring how humans have used scent through time and explain the workings of the modern perfume industry. The talk will end with a smelling session, where we will experience 10 of the most important historical and modern materials. Join us to learn the hows and whys of perfumery, and let our curated aromatics transport you through time and space.

Directors’ Panel: The Social Responsibility of Branded Storytelling

Every time we tell a story, it leaves an impact on the audience, whether positive or negative. Be it a story to entertain, inspire, or empower, it has the potential to shape the audience’s perspectives and influence their actions. So while brands must develop narratives to stimulate favorable consumer behavior, let’s not forget to pose the question: “What kind of society are we building as a result of these stories?” Join our featured film directors in this thought-provoking deep dive.
